My role at Parents Place is a Family Resource Specialist and a Community Navigator. What led you to your current role? I attended the Information Fair & Festival two years in a row. My son has been attending for two years. When I saw that the Parents’ Place employees were so passionate about their jobs, and took such good care of the Kids, this made my son and I feel so welcome. I told my husband “One day I want to be a part of something like this and make a difference in kids’ lives”. What do you most enjoy about your role? I enjoy welcoming the families into our center and listening to their stories. I like figuring out a plan of what I can do to help them. Knowing that families come in seeking our help and letting them know that they are not alone is important. I enjoy providing resources, talking with them and helping them navigate technology. This makes me feel so wonderful and blessed to be a part of the Parents Place Team. What advice would you give to a person who is interested in joining the Parent’s Place FRC team? Dear Parents, Professionals and Community Members, I hope you are enjoying your Summer with your family and friends! At Parents’ Place, we kicked off the Summer with our annual Open House, on Friday, June 21st. Our goal each year is to welcome new families from the community and strengthen their awareness and access to available resources. I am pleased to report that we had our largest Open House turnout of 308 people, and the majority of parents visited us for the first time! The Open House was a fun event for everyone involved. Parents were able to meet our staff and network with other families, while the children enjoyed Alligator Al’s fascinating reptile show. Furthermore, many parents were lucky winners of prizes that we raffled at the end of the evening. Thank you to all donors and volunteers who helped us coordinate and execute the event. We would also like to give a warm thanks to Dr. Pendleton, Principal at Coronado High School, for her continued support with our Open House. As we start the second half of the year, I would like to reflect and highlight Mary Holland, a Parents’ Place Board Member and one of our founders. Mary has supported Parents’ Place since 1989 in many ways, both through her leadership and expertise. Mary has been a guest facilitator for our Play to Learn workshops and has shared vital child development information at our Birth to Five seminars. | We are very grateful for all that Mary does for families of children with special needs in our community. This upcoming quarter, we will continue to offer valuable information and we are introducing two new trainings in English and Mandarin: Medi-Cal Eligibility (8/20/19) and Social Security Eligibility & Appeals (9/26/19). The representatives will also offer 30-minute, one-to-one clinics immediately following the training. During the October -December quarter the presenters will be bilingual in English-Spanish. You must pre-register for the trainings and the individual clinics since space is limited. In closing, please note that we are celebrating our milestone, 30th Annual Birth to Five Disabilities/Possibilities Seminar on September 28th, 8 am - 1 pm. We are honored to have Ruth Padilla-King, LCSW from Kaiser Educational Outreach Program as our keynote speaker. She will be discussing the importance of attachment and social and emotional development of children 0-5 years of age. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. This year our seminar will be held in Coronado High School’s cafeteria in West Covina. Please go to our website www.parentsplacefrc.com to register. You may also call our office at (626) 919-1091 for more information. We are looking forward to seeing you this quarter! |
